Winning!!!

By: John A. Carlos II

Congratulations to my nephew on winning his pinewood derby race this past weekend. The lesson learned from this was that of my own hubris. We entered in the adult race one of my old cars. This car was a former champion in its own right, but nothing was the same the wheels were different, and the ones we put on where broken. I learned that you can't go back to the past, you can only move forward. Things you have learned make you better. Why go back and run on broken wheels?

From time to time I looked back at my own work, sometimes I'm struck by what I've done and what I have left undone. I know that I continue to grow as a person and as an artist. Whether like anything else peoples taste change... I've often looked at my old work as someone else's. I believe at that time I was someone else, so the work I did is not representative of the person I have become, and therefore someone entirely different. I can't help thinking that other artist have done something similar, is it human nature? That do we learn about ourselves by remembering the past? Is my life like that of the car, if I try to duplicate formulas that worked in past do they fall apart in the future... I think so.

As much as I'd like to go back, like in the race somethings are over and done after the finish line. We change, taste and reasons why we do are in a state of constant evolution. If the idea take root the motive to move and do, is stilled. Still, it is good to reflect it can bring new ideals and a new found understanding of the world around you. Am wrong in saying our politicians could learn something from reflection?
