Don't Drill Our Coast
By: John A. Carlos II
A bipartisan group of state legislators joined a few hundred protestors from across South Carolina gathered at the steps of the Statehouse to share their voices to growing opposition to oil and natural gas exploration and drilling offshore. The rally came after a Federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management meeting to inform the public on plans to offer leases for the work, including off the Palmetto State coast. In stark contrast to a series of meetings held by the Obama administration in 2017.
The law makers took turns criticizing, the Trump administration for pushing to open nearly all the coastal areas in the United States, despite wide opposition. U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C., condemned Trump stating, “If you can’t see an oil rig from the window in Mar-a-Lago, should you see one from the window at Pawleys Island?’’
